UNESCO

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was found on 16 November 1945. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations with a mission to promote international collaboration in the fields of education, science, culture, and communication. It is dedicated to building peace, eradicating poverty, and fostering sustainable development through various initiatives, including education, cultural exchange, scientific research, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

UNESCO LEARNING CITY

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is an international policy-based network launched in 2013. It aims to ensure the development of all learning cities by sharing ideas and arts with other cities. So far, 294 cities from 76 countries are included in this list. The GNLC recognizes the crucial role that cities play in shaping and implementing educational policies and practices. It brings together cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting inclusive and equitable education, fostering learning opportunities for all citizens, and harnessing education as a driving force for sustainable development.

The network supports the achievements of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but primarily focused on SDG 4 (‘Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all) and SDG 11 (making human habitats sustainable, inclusive, safe).

Unesco Learning City Thrissur

Thrissur, known as Kerala's cultural capital, is home to several research and academic institutions. It is also renowned for its thriving gold-based jewellery industry. Participating in the UNESCO GNLC, Thrissur strives to promote peer learning and intellectual growth, while placing a strong emphasis on equitable access to education, E-learning ecosystems, and sustainability skills. It successfully fulfills UNESCO's criteria for good practices, equity, and inclusion. Notably, Thrissur houses a regional center for the MSME-Development India Institute, which plays a vital role in supporting entrepreneurship and promoting decent work opportunities through upskilling initiatives.

WHY THRISSUR?

Thrissur municipality came into existence on 1st July 1942 and later in the year 2000 it was upgraded to the level of municipal Corporation. Thrissur formed as the fourth Corporation in Kerala acting as the head-quarters of Thrissur District. Thrissur is often regarded as a city of lifelong learning due to its rich cultural heritage, educational institutions, and promotion of various learning opportunities. It is enriched with its diverse educational, art and cultural institutions. Thrissur corporation plays a prominent role in promoting the art and cultural institutions. There are various educational institutions which include medical, engineering, agriculture and veterinary institutions. Thrissur has a vibrant art scene with various institutions dedicated to performing arts such as dance, music, and drama. Various art and cultural institutions such as Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy, Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy and School of Drama holds a significant position in promoting the cultural heritage of Thrissur. The district boasts a number of libraries and museums that offer a wealth of knowledge and information.

THILAKKAMProject

Thrissur Corporation is selected as one of the three learning cities in India for the UNESCO Learning City Project. As a part of transforming Thrissur into a learning city, Thrissur Corporation has formulated 'Thilakkam 2023' with scientific studies and which aims at promoting all educational institutions and educators under one umbrella and provides a platform for every individual. When the world of knowledge expands, let's strive for a better future where there is no limitations for learning; a world where everyone can learn irrespective of caste, class, religion, gender or age. Thilakkam project provides platform were children to older adults can participate in the process of learning and to explore the new opportunities that are awaiting them. 'Thilakkam' is the first step towards achieving this goal, with the aim of fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning ecosystem and it has developed a comprehensive and inclusive framework for the Learning City initiative. This framework, consisting of five pillars, forms the foundation for Thrissur's vision of lifelong learning and sustainable development.
